New Song: “At a Disco” for the Ignition Lab Week #22

The Ignition Lab is a group songwriting challenge to write a song a week  in 2013, using weekly word prompts as a starting point. Follow our work on Facebook: facebook.com/TheIgnitionLab

Apparently, once again, I’m catching up with my blogs posts (and with the songs! eek!) I’m going to post two back to back. The first is my little dance song.

The word prompt for week #22 was an action prompt: Write a song without lyrics in the chorus. For this, I stuck to a little melody with no words.

I was riding the train a few weeks ago, and noticed how the lights in the tunnel were different colors. So I went to a fun place in my head with disco lights, and decided then that this should be the subject of my next song. I looked around the car to find that everyone was super relaxed and chilling, very un-NYC-like. I pictured us all taking a dancing break, and my imagination took it from there.

The verse melody is extremely simple and repetitive. I wanted the focus to be on the bouncy melody in the chorus. I would really, really love to make a music video out of this. I have a vision in my head. I think it’d be simple and fun, but would require a NYC subway.

Check it out. Lyrics after the video:

At a Disco

Sitting in the back of the train
Watching lights as they speed passed
It’s like being at a disco
If I use my imagination
Heads bouncing to the beat of our lives

Living in our little words
No ones keeping score
Wearing anything we like
Bright colors bright lights
‘Cause it’s like being at a disco
if I use my imagination
